IIISLAS ACCEPTING DONATIONS TO HELP MEMBERS OF BMS FAMILY AT THIS DIFFICULT TIME

About Us

We, the Indian Insurance Independent Surveyors and Loss Assessors Sangh ( IIISLAS) is a union of Independent practicing surveyors in India operating in the insurance industry for a long time We are registered under the Indian Trade unions acts 1926 as an All India trade union. Insurance surveyors and Loss Assessors are intermediaries in the insurance Industry. As per the Insurance Act, all the claims above a prescribed limit can be settled by an insurer only after obtaining a report from a licensed surveyor. Even though the role of surveyors envisaged by the parliament is that of an important entity in the insurance industry, the surveyors were being neglected and exploited by various stakeholders for years.

In 1998, when a public sector insurance company was first launched an in-house survey, our fraternity was under the threat of loss of a job. The opinion among surveyors in Kerala at the time was that, without the support of a trade union with political backing, we cannot combat such problems. As part of that, the then surveyors approached the leading trade unions with the support of the main political parties at that time, but they were not interested as our surveyor community was small in number. Then we had approached the BMS as a last resort. They realized that there are lots of problems for our fraternity, which can be dealt with by a trade union only. They gave the assurance to stand with us and agreed to give us affiliation. That is how ISLAS ( Insurance surveyors and Loss Assessors sangh) was born. As a result of our agitation at that time, we were able to limit the in-house survey to a nominal one. Then the organization was not much active until 2014, since there were no significant problems in our working atmosphere. Later, during the period of 2013-14 when the Insurance Act was being amended, we noticed a number of harmful proposals, including the removal of the requirement for the services of a licensed surveyor.

As all are aware, our institute, being promoted by IRDA, has many limitations to deal with such issues and many other issues relates to our profession. Hence it was decided to revive the ISLAS in 2014. It is a fact that we have been able to co-operate with all India leaders of IIISLA in the issues of amending the Insurance Act and in the draft regulation which came up last year to a great extent to protect the Surveyor community from adverse conditions. With the unconditional support of BMS local units, we have been able to combat some of the unjustified actions faced by some of our members on the part of dealers and some insurance companies. Since our revival, we have been providing all possible support to IIISLA, our professional body. Most of the members in Kerala are its members irrespective of party affiliation, caste or religion. Let us emphasize here that IIISLAS membership is not a barrier to working in any political party.

As you all know, BMS itself has dealt with the issue of Contract Survey (EOI / LAA) which has come up as a major threat to us today. There are also a number of issues that need to be addressed, such as surveys of private company employees above the limit and unjustified interventions by dealers. We intend to support and advise our professional body, IIISLA, at the all-India and chapter level. As part of extending the trade union supports the National level, we had revived our registration as an All India Trade Union in the name of Indian Insurance Independent surveyors and Loss Assessors Sangh ( IIISLAS). We request support from the independent surveyors all over the country and request them to join hands as our members.
